Naturally

I saw a reference recently to a Drabble, a 100 word fiction piece. It reminded me that I had one. It was written in 2016 just for the fun of working the word constraint. This is it (100 words, including the title, according to Word):

Naturally

We were too many. We were too costly. A secret meeting was held and a policy proposed. It received assent. Naturally, we began to die.

At first, no one noticed. It was long after implementation that the policy became clear. Drugs off the market. Medicines withheld. Treatments denied.

There was outrage. Accusations were levelled. They were paling evening light.

The economy improved. Costs went down and employment stabilized. Deficits, debt, taxes…All dropped, as did the qualms. They were set aside, discreetly.

At home in my bed, my natural span is ending. No one is required to pay for me.
